Mount Batukaru

📍 Wongaya Gede, Penebel, Tabanan

Gunung Batukaru is Bali's second-highest peak and one of the island's most sacred mountains. Its slopes are covered by primary cloud forest, home to leaf monkeys, wild deer, and countless bird species. The Pura Luhur Batukaru temple, one of Bali's six most important temples, sits on the southern slope at 1,300m.

Hiking to the summit is challenging (10-12 hours round trip) and typically starts before dawn with a local guide. Shorter walks through the surrounding forest offer easier ways to experience Batukaru's spirituality and biodiversity. The temple area is open to visitors year-round.

Guided treks available from Nirjhara. Bring warm clothes for summit (can be 10°C). Best months: April-October (dry season).
