The most common first-time Bali question: Ubud or Kuta? The answer depends on what you want.
Kuta — parties, surfing, beach right there
Kuta is the tourist heart of southern Bali. Pros: beach 100m from hotel, great surf for beginners, endless restaurants and bars, close to airport (15 min). Cons: crowds, night noise, ugly main street of souvenir shops. Alternatives to Kuta: Seminyak (classier) or Canggu (surfers, digital nomads).
Ubud — culture, yoga, jungle
Ubud lies 40 km inland — 1.5h by car from the beach. Pros: rice terraces (Tegallalang), holy springs, yoga workshops, atmospheric warungs, cooler nights. Cons: no beach, traffic in centre, quiet evenings (too boring for partygoers).
Who each is for
- Ubud: first-time Asia, yoga, meditation, culture, couples or solo;
- Kuta: young party crowd, beginner surfers, budget travel;
- Seminyak: premium beach clubs, restaurant dinners, Instagram vibe;
- Canggu: digital nomads, coworking, cool cafes, great surf;
- Sanur: families, ferry to Nusa Penida, calm beach.
Our recommendation: split your trip
You don't have to choose. The standard 10-day trip is 3 days Seminyak + 3 days Ubud + 4 days rest of island (Nusa Penida, Munduk). See our 10-day Bali itinerary.
