Bali is Mecca for surfers — from beach breaks with small predictable waves to rugged reef breaks for pros.
Kuta / Legian — beginners
Sandy bottom, waves 0.5-1.5m, plenty of surf schools. Private lesson: 300-500k IDR (2h). Group: 150-250k IDR. Soft-top board rental: 50-100k IDR/day. Recommended schools: Rip Curl School of Surf, Odysseys.
Canggu — intermediate
Batu Bolong, Old Man's, Berawa — reef break/pointbreak. Waves 1-2m, predictable year-round. Digital nomad vibe — surf morning, work in cafe till evening.
Uluwatu — advanced and pro
Iconic left reef break, waves 2-4m and more. Padang Padang famous as "Balinese Pipeline". Bingin — slightly smaller. Don't start here — coral, currents, crowds.
When to surf
- April-October — dry, consistent swell (west swell for Uluwatu, Canggu, Bingin);
- November-March — rain, but perfect for east coast (Nusa Dua, Sanur, Keramas);
- Morning 6-9 AM — best conditions, least wind;
- Tides affect the break — check Magicseaweed/Surfline apps.
Safety
- Never surf alone;
- Reef booties for rocks (Uluwatu);
- Sea urchins sting sharp — leash on ankle;
- Sports insurance covering surfing.
