Balinese cuisine is a mix of Indonesian classics and Balinese traditions. Key: eat at warungs — cheap (10-30k IDR = 1-2 EUR) and authentic.

Indonesian classics

  • Nasi goreng — fried rice with egg, veg, chicken;
  • Mie goreng — fried noodles;
  • Sate ayam — chicken skewers with peanut sauce;
  • Gado gado — vegetable salad with peanut sauce;
  • Rendang — beef stewed in coconut milk.

Balinese specials

  • Babi guling — Balinese roast pig (Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka in Ubud, 40k IDR);
  • Bebek betutu — duck baked 8 hours in banana leaf;
  • Ayam betutu — chicken in betutu spices;
  • Lawar — meat salad (avoid white lawar at cheap places).

Where to eat

  • Warung (street eatery) — 10-30k IDR;
  • Mid-range restaurant — 80-150k IDR;
  • Beach club (Potato Head, Ku De Ta) — 200-500k IDR;
  • Fine dining (Locavore, Mozaic Ubud) — 800k+ IDR.

Drink only bottled or boiled water. Ice at decent places is OK (factory, rounded).
